I find this very intriguing. Usually the US wouldn't say a peep publicly about any sort of space defense systems unless there was a LOT of public pressure or leaks. The secretary coming out and basically saying that we have total domination of space (presumably this is just limited to LEO) is a game changer. In the past, the US has been reluctant to bring up the topic over fears of starting a new cold war in space. I think they finally realized that the Cold War is already going on. China, India, Japan, and other countries are eyeing manned missions to the Moon as early as the 2030s, when just a few years ago it was public knowledge that they had no capability to do so. Their space sectors are exploding. So are ours. We no longer have to keep achievements under wraps, and we no longer have to be afraid of the future. Space was always the key to unlocking the solutions to the problems we face. Goods scarcity? Mine asteroids for virtually limitless resources. World hunger? Use byproducts of asteroid mining to vastly improve agricultural output (and also put greenhouses in space where they get 24/7 sunlight and a self-contained water system. Data centers not popular? Just throw them in space? Need energy? Put solar panels in heliocentric orbit and beam the energy back to earth. Overpopulation? The universe is ours to colonize (assuming no other intelligent life exists - if it does, we'll probably make sure it doesn't rather quickly). The vast majority of these concepts are workable with modern technology. We just have to go out there and seize the opportunity. And that is precisely what the Trump administration's space policy is aiming to do.
